HMRC now accepts online payments by debit and credit cards for SDLT

5th June 2015

05.06.2015 - The service was introduced on 19 May and allows Lawyers to complete their client’s Stamp Duty Land Tax payments on the new online system by debit or credit card.

Firms will need the Unique Transaction Reference Number (UTRN) found on the electronic SDLT5 certificate (or the paper SDLT return) to make the payment. An email confirmation will be sent once the payment has been made.

The new service is now available on GOV.UK and all the other payment methods such as CHAPS, online or telephone banking and cheques through the post will still be acceptable. Please remember that payments should reach HMRC on the last working day before the deadline if it falls on a weekend or bank holiday.
